June is almost over and it’s going out very uncomfortably as we are experiencing the Canadian smoke that has made a lot of the upper U.S. extremely dangerous and unpleasant   Air quality is awful. It’s suggested we do not even go outside.  We’re still in a drought, but the heat has gone down.  Without daily watering, it would be no garden, this year. But we are gardening, and I’m actually happy with the results, so far.

Pea Trellis

Pea Trellis

The pea harvest is going great.  This is the trellising system I use and it works very well.  I grow four varieties. The most interesting is the soup pea, Capucijner, also called purple podded. It has the prettiest simple flower.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes

The sweet potatoes are vining out and the foliage will soon cover the whole bed.

Zucchini

Zucchini

We have four hills of zucchini plants, all off to a good start.

Cabbage

Cabbage

Brassicas are scattered around the garden.  Here are some cabbage heads just starting to form.

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi

We had a wonderful first crop of kohlrabi. These little cabbage-like chunks are delicious.

Leeks

The leeks were transplanted to nine-inch deep holes.  This process forms a leek with lots of white stalk.

Okra, Carrots, and Beets

Okra, Carrots, and Beets

Here are some okra plants getting established.  Behind them are carrots and beets that need some thinning.

Climbers

Climbers

These trellises include cucumbers, climbing zucchini, several small winter squash, and tomatillos.

Tomatoes

And our favorite, the world’s most popular fruit, tomatoes.  We’ve got about 25 varieties.

Brandywine Tomato

I’m trying to prune most of the tomato plants to a two-leader system.  Here is a Brandywine I’m training to climb up the pole.

I hope you’re having a good garden this year. It has been good, but very strange for us.
