No Sale to the Big Boys

In our ongoing quest to make the CobraHead Weeder famous, we occasionally try new trade show venues. Since I thought there had to be a connection between farming and gardening, we exhibited at a show in Minnesota this week called Farmfest. The show organizers had invited us out as a “green” vendor and we were in a tent with others promoting such things as organic farming, sustainable agriculture, energy issues and land conservation. While I found the...

Monarch Magnets

We’ve grown purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) for many years. Once established, it’s a super-easy perennial, really only requiring weeding and occasional separation. It spreads quickly. By chance three years ago, we had some common milkweed (asclepias syriaca) show up in a clump of coneflowers we have growing by the light post in our driveway. Our normal reaction would have been to pull the milkweed out. It grows in some of the wilder part of the...

The Green Festivals are a heck of a lot of fun (not to mention educational), so bring the whole family! Hi y’all. I wanted to know about the mid length hoe you were talking...

Noel’s Sense of Snow and Compost

Compost is integral to sustainable gardening practices. It is also a great way to get rid of kitchen waste without putting stuff into the trash stream. We’ve been composting for as long as we’ve been gardening and our system now is a pretty automatic routine. All compostable kitchen waste is stored in a 2 1/2 gallon plastic bucket under the sink. Since we don’t eat any meat at home, most of our organic scrap waste goes into the compost bucket....

The Bookie’s Dilemma

What do we do when the garden is put to bed and the bountiful harvest is preserved? Besides savoring our “local” veggies all winter long we talk about food. I have been reading cookbooks and food-related articles for the past 37+ years — ever since my brother-in-law announced he was a vegetarian. We’ve belonged to food co-ops for over 33 years and at one point even provided our house as a ‘divide and distribute’ point. We now do...
