I work harder in the garden in May than in any other month. As usual at this time of the year, I’m way behind, but I’m still happy with what’s done so far. The south beds are neatly fenced in to protect the peas and other delicious delicacies from the marauding deer in the neighborhood. I’ve got all my trellises up, and the beds are in pretty good shape, with only one bed totally overgrown with weeds out of the eighteen in the plot.
This is my holding bed. It held a hoop tunnel which let me put a lot of vegetable starts outside beginning in late March. I still have to transplant eggplant, peppers, onions, and leeks from this bed to their permanent home.
The pea bed has ten trellises. It needs weeding, but the peas are looking great.
Red Norland potatoes have broken through. I have four types of potatoes growing in two beds.
Seventeen sweet potato plants under plastic.
This garlic was planted last October. It is looking great. We plant about 100 cloves. It lasts us all year.
A bed of brassicas: cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower.
I have two beds of trellised tomatoes. Each has twenty plants.
The lettuce patch was thickly seeded. We keep adding seed so we have a continuous supply.
My patch of Russian comfrey is drawing in the bumblebees.
I still have lots of planting to do. Cucumbers, squashes, melons and more need to be seeded, but I’ve got a good start and we are eating some good food.
