March is nearly over and we are getting serious about this year’s garden. I’ve got a few things started in the house and things are popping outside.
This flat is bottom heated and top lit. It has peppers, eggplant and cauliflower. The peppers and eggplant haven’t sprouted, yet, but the cauliflower is taking off. I won’t start anything new for a couple weeks since we’ll be out of town the second week of April and I don’t want to burden Anneliese with too much plant tending while were gone. Brassicas such as cauliflower sprout really quickly. Under my larger light setup, onions and leeks are well on their way. In the sunroom the sweet potatoes are looking good. I’ve got 25 sprouts and I need 18, so that’s good. The sweet potatoes need to be warm. This plastic tent acts like a mini greenhouse. Outside the soil is a mucky mess, as we had a huge rain a few days ago. While it was warm two weeks ago I got the raspberries pruned and cleaned up. The strawberries overwintered just fine. The garlic is poking out from its straw blanket. While we are waiting for our new crop of garlic and onions we have plenty of perennial onions and garlic to use now, I let a lot of cilantro bolt and seed and a lot sprouted over the winter. About a dozen kale pants all survived the freeze and are putting out leaf for this year. While I’ve got a lot of work to do, I feel we’re off to a pretty good start.
I really enjoy seeing your down-to-earth pictures and tips! Makes my efforts seem a little more “ok” since I am seeing the same in some of your pictures. Thank you!
