May was very warm and very dry here in south central Wisconsin. I’m doing a lot of hand watering, trying to water just the plants so as not to encourage weed growth in open areas which overhead sprinkling would certainly do.

Strawberries

A good thing about the open bed system I use is that it is easy to get a lot of water directly on the bed tops on with a hose and a wand.  The bad thing is, of course, we could use a lot more rain, soon.

Judy helped me put up a good fence for the south beds. Deer love peas and sweet potatoes, and while the fence makes some garden work difficult, I do not need to grow food for deer.

These newly transplanted tomatoes will be supported by T-posts and bamboo.  I make extensive use of T-posts for trellising and fencing.

Asparagus and Comfrey

Asparagus and Comfrey

Here is the comfrey where the bumblebee was working.  The small bed on the right is ready to plant and the two-year-old asparagus is looking good.

We still have a lot of planting to do, but the garden at the end of May is doing just fine.
