May was very warm and very dry here in south central Wisconsin. I’m doing a lot of hand watering, trying to water just the plants so as not to encourage weed growth in open areas which overhead sprinkling would certainly do.
A good thing about the open bed system I use is that it is easy to get a lot of water directly on the bed tops on with a hose and a wand. The bad thing is, of course, we could use a lot more rain, soon.
Judy helped me put up a good fence for the south beds. Deer love peas and sweet potatoes, and while the fence makes some garden work difficult, I do not need to grow food for deer. These newly transplanted tomatoes will be supported by T-posts and bamboo. I make extensive use of T-posts for trellising and fencing.
Here is the comfrey where the bumblebee was working. The small bed on the right is ready to plant and the two-year-old asparagus is looking good.
We still have a lot of planting to do, but the garden at the end of May is doing just fine.
