April brings on the hard work period of the gardening season. I keep looking for ways to make it easier. This old guy doesn’t quickly recover from hard work like I used to. Here are a few pictures of some of the things going on in the garden.
The hoop tunnel helps a lot. In the coming days, I’ll be putting starts directly from indoors to the soil in the tunnel. I have a brand new piece of 6-mil plastic for the cover and some easily removable doors. The tunnel is an invaluable tool for making transplanting easier.
Here are some starts getting their first hardening off sun exposure. By next week they should all be outside in the tunnel.
Sage and thyme plants overwintered nicely, although I did nothing to help them through the hard freeze. They made it on bare soil.
Some skinny shoots from our new asparagus. We won’t harvest it this year.
We have a bed of perennial onions, garlic, chives, and horseradish along with various herbs.
Here is the garlic crop coming up through the straw.
A little late, but still okay, Judy is pruning back the raspberries.
This bed has been prepared for potatoes, which I’ll plant next week.
This is also a bed for potatoes, but it needs to be forked and tilled with a hand cultivator before I put in the seed potatoes.
I’ll be doing a lot of bed preparation throughout May. April is the warm-up.
