The picture represents a very small fraction of the total tomato yield. I have forty plants growing in two beds. The 20 different types I grow our mostly heirloom varieties and a lot are started from saved seed.
One hybrid I have grown for a lot of years is Sungold. This small yellow/orange cherry tomato is always the first tomato to produce and it remains very productive right up until frost.
We grow several varieties of cherry tomatoes, different paste tomatoes, tomatoes of many colors, and a few different giant slicers. Besides being consumed fresh or cooked as they come off the vine, we dry some, we can some salsa, and we save most of the yield by freezing cooked tomatoes and tomato sauces.
I have no single favorite. Most tomatoes are great and the heirlooms do offer a lot of variety. However, I mentioned Sungold as a nice cherry, but it’s not my flavor favorite. Our favorite small tomato is called black cherry. It’s an heirloom, super prolific, with great black tomato taste.
We had 18 tomato plants that have outdone themselves. It is Sept 22 and I am ready to admit that from this first day of Fall, only tomatoes being eaten fresh will come into the kitchen!!! I wish tomato harvest started earlier and lasted later…not more fruit, just more time to enjoy them fresh.
I’m with you on that one!
